Macau shares a similar legal framework with Hong Kong. Both jurisdictions have a Basic Law and embody the principle of "one country, two systems" of the PRC. However, the legal system of Macau has its own roots in Portuguese law and belongs to the civil law tradition of continental Europe, as opposed to the common law system of Hong Kong. The territory is therefore a hybrid jurisdiction of 500 years of Portuguese administration and Chinese culture and practices.
